Pixies - “Head On” (Jesus and Mary Chain cover; Live in Studio; 1991)

If memory serves, the legend goes that “Head On” was a song Pixies would play for rehearsals and warm-ups from the very early days.

Which, if true, makes the story behind the video even more fun:

By 1991, the Pixies refused to film music videos for their singles. After a long debate with their record company in the United States — Elektra Records — the band relented and agree to film a video, as long as the song was done completely live. Peter Lubin, the A&R representative of Elektra at the time, later explained the situation:

By completely live that means full band, vocals, cameras roll, video’s done by the end of two minutes and 13 seconds. One take, that’s it. So those became the ground rules, that was the only way you were going to get a Pixies video for ‘Head On’ or anything else.

Everyone focuses a lot on trying to blow up overnight and using social media to drive as much attention as possible to whatever you’re doing, but I think one of the best assets you have when starting out is that no one knows who you are and no one cares what you’re doing. This lack of attention gives you the space and time to experiment—and to make mistakes before too many eyes are on you. The smartest entrepreneurs I’m meeting with these days are just building, getting feedback from early users, and then seeing what works and iterating from there. They’re focusing on improving their product and getting it right, and then trying to attract more attention after they’ve figured things out.”

- Peter Rojas, co-founder of gdgt.com and creator of Endgaget, Gizmodo, Joystqi and RCRD LBL (via hyuninc)

RAPPERS SHOULD THINK ABOUT THIS TOO. (via tumblinerb)

steampoweredmedia:

In most cases, their bravery hasn’t netted them much goodwill, but there’s not much risk in Jack White. Well, at least not anymore.

I’m going to go on and admit that I’m was/am a fan of White’s music. I enjoyed the White Stripes immensely and I’m very glad that I went to see them perform in a strange redneck amphitheater in Mississippi on what turned out to be my last chance. I’ve enjoyed Meg White’s childish drumming style and Jack’s howling vocals with pleasant hipster-ish head nods.

And I like Jack’s mew record. It’s sonically pleasing. It is EXCATLY what you’d expect of a Jack White record. Garage Rock-y , Blues-y, Country-y.

It’s good.

I recommend it in the same way that I can recommend 60% of Elvis Costello’s catalogue. Its solid, but not everything can be Imperial Bedrooms.

Despite Meg’s absence, the new material feels like a natural and normal progression into a solid late life rock singer-songwriting career.

But something is changing. I can’t tell you if it’s internal or external. Maybe I’m just now beginning to build up immunity. Maybe the deeply pervasive ironic self-detachment that the millennial era has brought into pop culture is getting to me.

I’m wondering. Is Jack White fucking with us?

I’m uncomfortable with how much he wants us to know how REAL he is.

There is a deeply subtle difference between what is understood as “real” and what is considered “authentic.” Jack White is real in the same way that Wu-Tang clan “keeps is real.” The Wu-Tang Clan claimed lifetime allegiance to gritty street aesthetics even as their success and wealth allowed them to elevate above it.

White maintains with dutiful curator-like attention to the realness of his image and aesthetic. He is true to a way of life, even as that way of life passes him by.

The western cut work shirts, the white makeup, the hair. None if it is created in a vacuum. White crafts his image with the same care that Marilyn Manson once did. He famously fetishizes analog recording techniques. He’s moved to Nashville, a perfect example of a city in which realness papers over its old authenticity.

White is praising a specific period aesthetic. He is telegraphing with every choice the idea of his realness. He is hitting you in the head with it.

We music fans just love authenticity and there are musicians who so personify their own authenticity that they never need to provide their credentials again. Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Al Green, they do not need to “keep it real.” They simply need to remain themselves. They cannot “go disco.”

When did this become difficult? When did Pop music begin to collapse into itself? To take the analogy too far, it feels as though Pop music is reversing from the sun to a black hole. Music is now the processing of mashing together prior innovations into effective hybrids and then spinning them back out; only to be remashed into paste and cherry picked for the good bits.

White is covered in good bits. He’s utterly adorned with them. You listen and you hear the warmth of a man committed to analog mixing boards. Except you don’t, because every common way of music listening is now digitized. So all that work and effort to attain authenticity is wasted. The analog effort becomes an exercise in “keeping it real.” It is a way to show the outside world that you respect the old ways, even as they fade into caricature.

So do I like Jack White? Yes. I can put his album on and enjoy it. It is clearly the work of an incredible craftsman who takes his work seriously. At the same time, as I look at him singing covered in his talismans, I wonder why I shouldn’t go listen to the artists he’s revering in his choices rather than his version.

(via Episode 10 Katrina Coleman- people I know)
